Area Two Annual General Meeting, March 2020
The IYFR Area 2 AGM was held in the city of Cartagena de Indias, Colombia, between March 11 and 15. Representatives from nine countries attended. The official program started with the Meet and Greet. We enjoyed the warm reencounter with friends from different latitudes. Members of the host fleet, Cartagena de Indias, welcomed us with the recognized Caribbean warmth. We enjoyed a night of friendship in the magnificent Yacht Club of Cartagena, we dined outdoors with the constant temperature of 32 ° that this beautiful city has. Between typical dishes, toasts and camaraderie elapsed Area 2 Meet and Greet 2020.
On the morning of the 12th, we received the visit of the Director of the Children's Hospital “Napoleón Franco Pareja” at the hotel. The Director told us about the activities and capacities of the hospital and the outstanding care of this establishment, projecting instructional slides in this regard. At the end of the conference, the AGM attendees handed over the donation of toys for the hospitalized children.
After an excellent lunch, we went to the conference room where the Area 2 AGM was held. We had the opening words and greetings from IC Robert Burns via Skype. Then there was an exposition on the development of Area 2 regarding finances, news, membership, public image, etc. by IRC Angie Mesistrano. The FCs of each fleet also delighted us with comments on their nautical and service activities, displaying colourful PPTs. Finished with the classic exchange of pennants and savouring the renowned and exquisite Colombian coffee. At night, we sailed to the restaurant of the Fishing Association where we savoured typical Caribbean food and had fun with a colourful karaoke. It was a memorable day.
The 13th March was dedicated to discovering the magical city of Cartagena de Indias with its particular colonial architecture and its rich history. We walked through the Historic Centre on a very entertaining City Tour. We also got to know the Popa Convent, the Panoramic Castle, San Felipe, Las Bóvedas and other tourist attractions. After this fun ride, we enjoy a delicious and tasty lunch. At night, a special program awaited us: the great Pirate Night themed party in the bay of Cartagena aboard a galleon. The crew waited for us with refreshing drinks, traditional Colombian food, pirate costumes and great music. Groups of young dancers visited us in the galleon that turned it into an unforgettable night.
On the 14th we moved to the Yacht club in Cartagena, where after having a delicious aperitif we set out to navigate the bay obtaining wonderful views of the city that was formerly the largest port in America, from where great treasures were shipped to Europe. Many stories of corsairs and battles remain under the waters near Cartagena.
In the evening, a wonderful gala dinner awaited us. As a corollary to such a magnificent international meeting, Iquique fleet was chartered with its Commodore, Claudia Felip, and its fleet bridge. We received emotional words of farewell from the Cartagena de Indias FC, Amaury Benedetti, and recognition for those who worked in the organization of this wonderful AGM 2020. Then, already relaxed and with the feeling of the mission accomplished, we danced to the rhythm of good Caribbean music. On the 15th, we began to say goodbye to dear friends who travelled many thousands of kilometres to share this AGM in Area 2. Many had to fly to their home countries, whilst others stayed a few more days in that magical city called Cartagena de Indias.
